Mrs. Doubtfire just doesn't do it for me anymore. I'm not completely sure why.
Maybe I've been spoiled by newer, excellent popular-comedian-crossdresses-as-a-sassy-woman-wacky-antics-ensue films such as Big Momma's House and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Don't get me wrong, these films owe a big debt to Doubtfire. Without Robin William's trail-blazing masterwork, gems like Big Momma's House wouldn't even exist. But if we want films to be fresh and relevant, new stories must reflect today's times and culture. What was considered revolutionary in the popular-comedian-crossdresses-as-a-sassy-woman-wacky-antics-ensue genre when Mrs. Doubtfire came out is now considered passé, even archaic, if you will. The newer films have continued to push the limits of this genre and where it can go. Mrs. Doubtfire has well earned it's place in film history, but let's enjoy these newer films for what they are. Or maybe it's just the atrocious writing/acting/directing that don't do it for me anymore. Either way, I think we can all agree that Harvey Fierstein has a funny-sounding voice. |
